This is how Tumba Junior Match Play works

Foto av Sven TumbaSven Tumba about match play:

I was thirteen and started playing ice hockey and soccer and the absolutely most popular thing was to split up the group into two and play match until sunset. It was on the rink and the soccer field where I really learned to play!

Do you recognize yourself?

The same is true for golf! Practice is important, but to play against opponents in match play on the course is where you really learn to play!

Here's how it's played

Throughout the season until September 10 you can try to qualify to the Swedish national finals that takes place on Kyssinge Golf September 18.

Ten players, the top two from each handicap flight with the most won matches (scalps) get to participate in the Swedish national finals.

You simply challenge anyone, yes, even an adult, in match play. You can play either 9 or 18 hole rounds. You are only allowed to play twice against the same opponent.

To the junior coach:

Go ahead and match junior and boost golf in Sweden. Once the junior has played their game, save their score card which should include both players names, golf id's, scores, course played and the email of the winner. It must also be signed by the junior leader/coach. During the summer we will be checking how many wins you have!

You need to gather as many scalps (wins) as possible by September 10 when the qualification period ends.

All results must be reported to your junior leader/coach.

If you win your flight in the Swedish national finals you become Swedish golf champion and represent Sweden in the world finals in South Africa.
(You need authorization from your parent or legal guardian.)

Now begins the hunt for scalps and the chance to reach then national finals and world finals in South Africa. There are many players in Sweden who wants to meet you, so go ahead and challenge each other!!

Lets make this the largest junior competition ever!

Kalmar Golf club and Joakim Haeggman

Sven Tumba is a person who is passionate about this and he has once again contributed a brilliant idea for the benefit of golf, Tumba Junior Match Play! The idea is fantastic because it has so many elements that attract our juniors, simplicity, challenge, because it is free, in some cases the speed and also the challenge to maybe represent Sweden. Can it get any better?

Kalmar Golf Club and Joakim Haeggman, our most famous profile also burns for our juniors, celebrates this initiative and we support Sven in his tireless work to develop golf, this time for the juniors. We now have our fingers crossed that Tumba Junior Match Play attracts many of the country's juniors to play more golf!

Snöå Golf Club

Hello Sven! I presented your idea on our board and have only received positive response. For my part, I think it is an excellent idea. Good with match play as it presents the real strategic golf game to the juniors. Moreover, it will shorten game times and trigger young people to hunt scalps. The older generation should also play more match play.

Kjell Redhe, Chairman

Brevikens Golf Club

Hello Sven, Thank you for your involvement. I drew this for our junior leaders and they were thrilled: On April 30 we started our match play competition. Our game ladder will be placed on a visible place in the club house. Now we can get our juniors to play a lot of matches. From our entire Junior Committee and Board of Brevikens GC, we say a big thank you and if you take on the challenge you are more than welcome to play some matches here to Breviken. For many of us you have been a great role model throughout the years and your commitment to bring more golfers to the sport goes beyond all. If there is anyone who can reverse the dismal trend in golf with declining membership and golfers, it's probably you, Sven. Thanks from your friends and supporters,

Bertil Garpenholt, President and Club Manager

Ullna Golf Club

Sven, Our kids will love this - not just on Ullna but throughout Sweden! Match play is the funniest form of play available and unfortunately has been forgotten over the years - repressed by Stableford ... Thanks Sven for re-introducing this classic form of competition in the forum of future golfers!

I took direct contact with our junior leaders and parents and everyone agreed. The benefits of Match Play in form of simplicity and speed is definitely a great way to boost our future golfers. It's also good that juniors get to compete for places in the Swedish finals with a chance to represent Sweden in South Africa! I hope some of our juniors reach South Africa! Uddevalla Golf Club

Hello Sven! We have initiated the idea of match play to our juniors and have gotten positive feedback, something new and fun instead of the usual "walk score". It will also make it easier to find new playmates when they can challenge for a duel. Looking forward to a summer with many fun and exciting games among our younger and older juniors. Thanks for a fun and rewarding initiative.

Öyvind Skeie, Junior Leader
